South African Wedding by As Sweet As Images

This month of August no doubt has been a fun one as we explore different cultures and how they celebrate their weddings. As you can see in the title, we are heading over to South Africa with Landiwe and Malibongwe’s wedding by As Sweet As Images.  Honestly I’m just going to sit on this one and swoon about the culture and color-rich attires from these pictures!

As usual, we’ve got the bride (Landiwe) to spill out some deets about her South African Wedding. Today we are focusing on their reception since the couple mixed the western and traditional by having a western style ceremony and a more traditional (South African style) reception. This is usually a great idea to mix your culture into your wedding without having 2 separate weddings.

With South Africa having 11 ethnic groups, today’s groom comes from the group called abeXhosa while the bride from the group called amaNdebele. Being from these 2 different ethnic groups, the couple both wore attires from their ethnic groups; Malibongwe’s Xhosa attire for men and Landiwe’s female Ndebele outfit.

The reception location was the Ubuntu Kraal in a township called Orlando Soweto. The couple and wedding party arrived at the reception location in their ethnic attires. The reception location was chosen “because it is built and decorated like a traditional Xhosa homestead – huts of different sizes with thatched roofs.” – Landiwe

At the reception the bridal party opened the celebration by dancing into the venue with a rehearsed routine. The couple then followed the western program of a few speeches. After the speeches the bride and groom opened the dance floor with a short dance and the guests eventually joined in.
