When: April 22, 2017 | Where: Perdido Beach, AL | Theme: Beach, Outdoor, Movie Inspired | Colors: Blush Pink, Tan, Blue
As lovers of the gulf coast and an initial guest list of 300 people, Kayla and Mason’s options were quite limited when searching for the perfect venue. Then they eventually found Perdido Beach Resort and everything just kind of snowballed into perfection.
The couple chose to be on the deck overlooking the ocean. They pulled in the natural colors from their surroundings (blush, tans, white, pale blues, etc.) to have this overwhelming coastal ambiance and utilized a lot of florals to keep it romantic and modern.
How they Met
“It was September 2007. I was a freshman at Florida State University about to start my first day of work, coaching gymnastics at Trousdell Gymnastics Center. My stomach was in knots, nervous of what my new coworkers would be like. What if I couldn’t coach to their expectations? What if they didn’t like me? (remember, I was 18 yrs old, young and naive).
As I cautiously walked out onto the gym floor for my first class, a beginner boys class no less, my boss stopped me. I was coaching with a buddy! An experienced male coach! YES! One less thing for me to have to worry about. She pointed out my buddy coach, Mason. He sat on top a large stack of mats. As I approached him, my heart started to flutter… then suddenly stopped. His face…ew… looked like Quasimodo from the Hunchback of Notre Dame. His eye and nose were swollen and he wheezed a bit. Yet there was still something strangely attractive about him.
Mason introduced himself and quickly explained that he had an eye infection AND staff infection IN HIS NOSE… what a pick up line. After I threw up in my mouth a little bit, I immediately saw his kind, FUN, and loving heart, especially with children. The staff infection went away, the swelling diminished, and the next thing I know were kissing in his parents basement (remember, 18 yrs old).”
The Proposal Story
“Friday, December 11, 2015. I slept in a bit, don’t judge. Mason kisses me goodbye, as I lay in bed refusing to open my eyes. “Happy Anniversary” he says… What? Since when in our 8 years do we celebrate our anniversary… not normally our thing… I’ll run with it I guess.
After work, I go to visit my dad who was in the hospital, recovering from some complications from a planned surgery. Mason seemed very distraught on the phone as I discussed my plans with him. Guess he had something planned for our 8 yr anniversary??? Ran by the hospital, gave hugs and kisses, came home. Mason, still distraught, tried to rearrange his plans, as I got home much later than expected now.
He offered up dinner, some of my favorite fancy places. Wanting to try something new, I INSISTED on the Flora-Bama Yacht Club (Mason had fried shrimp, I had fish tacos, both with beer in plastic cups…. classy). After dinner, we went to our beach lot, across from my parents house, blanket and duck taped lantern in hand (Mason dropped it while getting ready… clumsy or nervous??). He wanted to give me a present at my favorite place, still had no idea the big question was coming (I should really be blonde)!
It was a scrapbook… yes! Mason scrapbooked, and scrapbooked well, fancy cutting tools and all. And on the last page… “Mr. and Mrs.” and he’s down on one knee… Taylor Swift’s “Our Song” (corny as it is, it’s actually our song) in the background… From there.. ask him because my head was in the clouds…”
About the Wedding Attire
“My dress was the most important decision to me. I feel like we get lost in our everyday style and I wanted to use this opportunity to express (and spoil) myself! I drove from Pensacola, FL. to Birmingham, AL (4 hour drive) 4 different times to find and alter the most perfect and unique dress.
My bridesmaids wore a ballet color dress to continue the muted coastal romance. For the boys, we chose navy suits to keep it coastal, modern, and sophisticated. We found that we loved the no tie look and kept it from being too fancy.”
About the Wedding Flowers
“We kept the flowers light and airy. We had a base of baby’s breath with such as blush astible, dusty miller, white and blush ranunculus, and hints of eucalyptus. The floral/decor company went above and beyond to create a personalized driftwood archway that was utterly breath-taking.”
About the Wedding Cake
“I’m not a cake person. We were going to go with a plain white cake. However, my mom watches too much TLC and INSISTED on a grand cake. I left it in her hands (and wallet). She worked with a fabulous cake designer with the resort and they created a magical, three tiered cake complete with chocolate driftwood pieces, white chocolate coral pieces, sand, watercolors, gold leaf texture, twinkle lights, and the most gorgeous edible shell cake topper.”
About the Wedding Favors
“Keeping it local was HUGE for us. We are foodies and love all the local seafood cuisine in our area. With most of our party traveling from out of town, we wanted them to experience all the tastes we love. We had a baked oyster bar, raw seafood bar, a shrimp and grits bar, tuna sliders, and tropical beef skewers with compliments of local cheese and bacon throughout. We topped it off with an eye catching steamship roundhouse!”
“We are movie people. Our main focus for personal details was hand painted signs with our favorite movie quotes. “He makes me melt like a popsicle on the fourth of July”.
Wedding Planning Advice
“Don’t be afraid to go over budget. You only get married once! It’s your time to celebrate your love and commitment to each other with friends and family. In 50 years you’re NOT going to look back and be thankful you cut back on your center pieces. You’re going to be elated because you had the time of your life!”
