Dusty Blue Whimsical Wedding Styled Shoot with a Surprise Proposal | Paris, ON

Today’s dusty blue whimsical wedding styled shoot is truly where all the gorgeousness is happening with a real surprise proposal in the middle of it! If you know anything about me, you know that the intersection where style and love meet is the intersection I’d be all over!

Captured beautifully by Chelsea Noel Photography, dusty blue, whimsical, nautical, seaside, simplistic, romantic – all the things that come to mind with this styled shoot.

Sara thought she was up for only a styled shoot but this ended up being the best styled proposal shoot ever. Sara appeared to be in complete shock and at a loss for words for what felt like a good minute, as Matt stood there holding a beautifully framed water-colour sign in front of her. The sign said – “Sara, will you be my last girlfriend ever? love Matt.”

After realizing that she hadn’t just been dressed up and dolled up for a styled shoot where they were “just modelling for us as the bridal couple”, but that she was actually, really, truly being proposed to… with a smile on her face and tears in her eyes she said YES!!

The Attire

“We wanted a beautiful blue/grey flowing tulle skirt from Mr Pretty Skirt, which is exactly what we got! We got a beautiful lace top to go with it, also from Mr Pretty Skirt. The details were just beautiful and the skirt turned out better then we could have imagined for the price! Obviously wanting the bride as the focal point in her gorgeous skirt, but also wanting the groom to look dashing, we put him in a matching grey suit with navy pants and we found an awesome blue, floral bow tie at Stars to match.”

The Shoot & Proposal Story

“We let Sara feel like she was in control of the personal details of the shoot the whole time. We put all the questions about the shoot and any details we needed to ask towards Sara even though most of the answers we already had from Matt! Matt and Sara spend a lot of their time in the Paris area and so Matt suggested that the Arlington Hotel may be the perfect place if we could use their event space. We were able to make an agreement with the hotel to use their space and it was absolutely perfect! Paris has to be one of the cutest little towns in Ontario, and the Arlington Hotel has the most beautiful event space – definitely worth looking into! Matt came up with many little details about their relationship that we could incorporate into the details of the shoot!

When Sara went to get dressed after hair and makeup, we told her and Matt that we wanted to create an actual first look and so we were going to make Matt wait downstairs while she changed. Really, Matt knew that this “first look” was actually going to be the moment that he surprised her with a proposal, and he was downstairs getting set up with a mic for the video, his boutonniere, his real engagement ring, and a frame with water-colored calligraphy that said “Sara, Will you be my last girlfriend ever? love Matt.”

Once Sara was ready we had her hold all of the special detail items Matt had us put together for the shoot and took some photos. We did this very carefully, instructing her exactly how to hold things and directing her where to look in order to keep her distracted. We did not want her reading the words on things yet as we did not want her to get suspicious or realize that some of these details were very specifically about her!

The menu for our table setup was one of these items, instead of having pretend food items or a menu on it, Matt had made a list of many of their favourite things – things they like to do together, favourite foods, favourite shows etc., and we called it “our(their) love recipe.” The bottom of the menu also held when and where they first met, their first kiss, their first date, and of course – when they said yes!

The invitation was special because instead of making a pretend wedding invite, we made it into more of an engagement announcement! From the top of it you could not really tell – it said “first comes love.” Then further down it had their names beautifully written below “our forever love story begins today, on this day of our engagement” with the words May 23rd 2018, Arlington Hotel, and Paris, ON. What a beautiful keepsake!

We had custom pillows made with Matt’s choice of words, which we had set up in our cozy pillow corner with candles all around for some romantic moments and more intimate photos! The pillows said “P.S. I Love You” and another one, “Love Never Fails.”

Back to the final detail, we had a special etched hanger made that said “Bride” on the front, and on the back Matt wanted it to say “I told you I’d surprise you.” This one was tricky because Sara could obviously see that it said Bride on the front and wondered why she was holding that towards herself, but she was too nervous to ask questions, and it was the last item we did so she didn’t have too much time to think about it before the proposal happened!

We set Sara up in front of the beautiful arch and floral hoop, facing away from Matt as we brought him back upstairs. Matt was so nervous coming up those stairs, he came to the arch and told her to turn around. We all stayed as silent as we could with probably the biggest smiles on our faces as we snapped away. It felt like forever until she realized what the sign he was holding said and he got down on one knee as she walked towards him with her hands clasped together and he reached into his pocket. Thankfully, the actual ring that Matt bought for Sara came in the day before the shoot so he was able to propose with the real deal! We had Sara wear her ring for the rest of the shoot, with the handmade, matching ring that was made for the shoot placed on her other hand.”

Flowers

“To compliment the architecture of the space, as well as our colour palette which could be described as “overcast day by the sea” we chose to take the path of neutral and minimal for our florals and styling. Most of the flowers used in Sara’s bouquet were in season and locally sourced, in order to reflect the beautiful varieties of flora in bloom at that particular time in Southern Ontario.

A whimsical and casual vibe were definitely the predominant elements of the design concept. From the loose bouquet tied with a very raw fabric in a trailing fashion, to the table garland arranged in a very simple way, with mostly all greenery. The hoop on the copper arbour was created on site in order to allow the original brick-work to become the focal point of the ceremony, while allowing the floral and greenery components to be a quiet and simplistic addition.”

The Cake

“A three tiered, buttercream frosted cake with a watercolour ombre effect and some beautiful florals added to it. Very elegant and simple and romantic and just to add to the beauty of it, the bottom of the cake had a favourite Bible text of Matt and Sara’s written all around it – “love is patient, love is kind…love never fails” from 1 Corinthians 13. Such a special and personal touch to add!

After the proposal, we added a cake topper that said – “The Adventure Begins!” We also had a bottle of champagne set up for photos and we sent it home with Matt and Sara as a gift along with the macaroons so they could celebrate!”
